Volunteers are important to the care sector and our business. As funding is reduced we are seeing people have their support to access social activities cut. Many people with learning disabilities enjoy routine, the opportunity to get out and about and meet up with friends.

Reducing these opportunities has a potential impact to their mental health and well being. Volunteers help us to deliver unpaid support to these people so they can continue to attend, alleviating these issues.

The Base utilises volunteers for a number of tasks:

  • Supporting service users who don’t receive paid support, with on-site activities
  • Helping at events such as the discos and fund raisers
  • Offering extra support to the paying service users with things such as arts & crafts, drama and dance sessions
  • Carrying out odd jobs within the day centre – brew making, washing up, photocopying, shopping etc.

In exchange, volunteers will receive:

  • Knowledge and experience within the care sector
  • Improved soft skills – confidence, communication, team work, flexibility
  • Proven work record and potential for a good work reference for future employment
  • Opportunities to apply for internal posts as and when they arise.
  • Sense of achievement

All we ask from our volunteers are that they are willing to join in with activities, are sociable with the people we support and are committed to their placement wherever possible.

All volunteers will require references and a DBS check (previously CRB) prior to starting. Once a voluntary placement is confirmed, training and induction will be provided.
